Being locked out of your apartment is stressful, especially at night. Take a breath and work through these steps.

Step by step

  • Check every door you have a key for, including a balcony or patio door.
  • Call your property manager or the on-site office; many have a spare.
  • Check whether a roommate or trusted friend holds a copy.
  • If none of that works, call a locksmith and ask for the price first.

What the locksmith will need

Expect to show ID with the apartment address, or a lease. If your ID shows an old address, the property manager may be able to confirm you live there.

Your lease and lock changes

Most leases don't allow tenants to change locks without permission. If you want a rekey after losing your keys, ask your landlord first and offer them a copy of the new key.

Avoiding the next one

  • Leave a spare with someone nearby you trust
  • Consider a keypad lock if your lease allows it
  • Keep a photo of your key so a copy can be cut
